The Internet of Things

You may be wondering, what is IoT? Or, if you’re already aware of the term, you may wonder what it means for you?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a phrase that is becoming more and more common. We hear it in our personal lives and in our business worlds. You have likely seen TV commercials from Fortune 500 companies to up-and-coming companies talking about their role in the Internet of Things. IoT effects our daily lives. Simply put, IoT is the interconnectivity between all the different smart devices (the things in IoT) on the market and the Internet. And an increasing number of our things are getting smarter.

Consider how much IoT has changed our lives. When was the last time you called a cab from a pay phone? Or driven to a video store to rent a movie? When was the last time you put an ad in a newspaper to sell an item or saw a print ad? Or gone from store to store to find a piece of clothing in your size? Depending on your age, gender, and various other factors, the answer may range from never to ten years ago, to sometimes.

No matter the particulars of how it has impacted you personally, the Internet of Things certainly has made our daily lives simpler. And it is changing rapidly. I can’t predict the future, but I’m confident enough to say that tomorrow you will be able to do things differently than you do today because of IoT.

The Industrial Internet of Things

What about IIoT, the Industrial Internet of Things? As much as IoT effects our personal lives, IIoT impacts our business lives. The things we use every day are getting smarter, providing more data and information. Smart manufacturing makes use of these intelligent devices to provide greater process visibility and better decision making. Rockwell Automation calls this The Connected Enterprise.

"Smart manufacturing is the gateway to digital transformation. Connected smart devices open new windows of visibility into processes. Data and analytics enable better and faster decision making. Seamless connectivity spurs new collaboration. The Connected Enterprise makes all this possible. It converges plant-level and enterprise networks, and securely connects people, processes, and technologies.” – Rockwell Automation
